Milk Donation Receipts

Statement from the MADMA board

We have received many requests to donate milk in return for a receipt to take part in the online milk donation challenge that pays out a $250 Amazon gift card. We love that milk donation is being encouraged! However, we are not able to participate due to safety concerns and will no longer be issuing receipts for the challenge. One of the things that makes our organization safe and sustainable is that the milk donation is altruistic. When there is a monetary incentive combined with financial need, it can potentially lead to watering down milk, donating a liquid other than breastmilk, giving false or incomplete screening information, and/or giving one’s own baby less milk. This is particularly unsafe for our sharing model where milk is given out without going through the pasteurization process (although directions for home pasteurization are provided). If you are a milk donor and would like to take part in the challenge, we suggest donating first to a formal milk bank. Our recipient families would be grateful for any ongoing, purely altruistic donations of any excess breastmilk you have after that! We hope that in the future, those with money to give away will consider the financial strain that young families are under and support them in ways that are accessible for all kinds of families, not just those who make extra milk.
